General Description:

Under immediate supervision, performs responsible protective service work in fire suppression; does related work as required. Responds to fire alarms, combats and extinguishes fire and performs rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work; conducts pre-fire surveys, inspects businesses for fire hazards and code violations and tests hydrants for water flows and proper operation; develops and conducts community education programs for businesses, schools and individuals; on a relief basis, drives assigned fire apparatus, operates pumps, regulates water pressure at scene of fire and cleans and services apparatus; responds to medical calls and renders aid, conducts rescue operations involving, but not limited to: vehicles, high angle, confined space and trenches; attends monthly medical training; participates in continuing training and instruction programs by individual study of technical materials and attendance at scheduled drills and classes; performs work in the maintenance of the fire station building, grounds, apparatus and related equipment.
Requirements:
: High School diploma or equivalent. Successfully complete a physical agility test and pass drug test and receive an acceptable background check. Upon hiring, personnel, personnel must successfully complete basic fire training which includes obtaining a NC Fire fighter Level II certification an d an EMT-D medical certification. The following areas will be covered in recruit school but not limited to these areas; General knowledge of firefighting techniques, procedures and mechanics as applied to fire suppression; some knowledge of the principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression; Tools and equipment, ventilation, overhaul, forcible entry, ladder training, live burn exercises, fire prevention, alarm systems, airway management, patient assessment, medical emergencies, vital signs, trauma management, pediatrics, geriatrics, cardiac emergencies. General knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City; general knowledge of the operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment and apparatus and ability to operate such equipment safely and effectively. Ability to obtain possession of a valid North Carolina class B driver's license within 30 days of completion of recruit school. Prefer 20 years of age or older.
